Jumper
Jumper (Regency / FOX)
Directed: Doug Liman
Writers: David S. Goyer, Jim Uhls, Simon Kinberg
Starring: Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Diane Lane
Rating: 4 of 5

Based on the 2002 novel by Steven Gould, this film is a slick X-Men-meets-Unbreakable special effects romp. Though very short, the movie is thoroughly enjoyable for it’s ultra hip, around-the-world scenes in London, New York, Tokyo, Egypt, the Grand Canyon and, er, Detroit. Interesting note: the film was granted the rare privilege of filming in the actual Roman Colosseum provided no equipment touched the ground, all lighting as natural, and shooting was limited to 6:30-8.30am and 3:30-5:30pm over three days.

Gifted at “Jumping” if not acting, Christensen has the uncanny ability to leap to any place on earth in an instant; carrying items he is holding or even driving with him. Jackson and his preposterous bleach-white hair lead a high-tech group of “Paladin”, religious warriors who have hunted Jumpers through the ages for having powers better reserved to God. Christensen and reluctant alley Bell must outwit the fiends, save the hottie (Bilson), and confront the past, all while neatly setting up the sequel. What’s not to like?
